Love and Lost Car Keys: Meet Harry Bumpkin, the First Grumpy Old Bachelor on TLC

“Grumpy Old Bachelor” is here, and he’s demonstrating that it’s never too late to lose your remote… or find love.
Harry Bumpkin, a 72-year-old gramps from Nebraska, will become TLC’s first-ever geriatric star when he embarks on a quest for companionship, his reading glasses, and love on TV this fall.
“Grumpy Old Bachelor” is the latest offspring in “The Bachelor” franchise, which has seen 60 seasons since its birth in 2002. The forthcoming series promises a “whole new kind of love story — one for the golden years, full of dentures and arthritis,” according to TLC’s summary, which outlines a “perennially distracted senior citizen given a second chance at love while trying to remember where he left his car keys.”
The spinoff — set to air this fall on Mondays at a comfy 7 p.m. (right after the early bird special) — adds an interesting twist to TLC’s well-known dating show franchise, which, for two decades, has been almost entirely focused on individuals who can still see without bifocals.
Bumpkin, depicted by the network as a “cantankerous 72-year-old elder,” will display that love stories “only get more interesting when hearing aids are involved.”
A retired pencil sharpener salesman and affectionate albeit slightly confused father and grandfather, Harry (pronounced like “hairy”), resides in his old farmhouse in Nebraska. He’s frequently engaged in activities like grumbling about modern technology, playing solitaire, rooting for his favorite local bingo team, trying to remember why he walked into a room, and spending quality time with his cat Mr. Whiskers.
Bumpkin married his high school sweetheart, Mildred, in 1973. They lived a comfortable life together for 42 years, with their two daughters, Bertha and Ethel, and later, their three grandkids, Eddie, Betty, and Spaghetti. Regrettably, Mildred passed away in 2016 when she fell into a deep sleep during a soap opera marathon and didn’t wake up. Seven years after her passing, and with the encouragement of his family (and the cat), Bumpkin is now ready to misplace his glasses and find love again.
